Xiutla at Fifteen
Fifteen years is a big deal in Mexico. Traditionally a time of celebration for the family, young women are feted on this day more than on any other except perhaps their wedding. So when Xiutla, the folklore ballet troupe extraordinaire of Puerto Vallarta, hit 15, it was certainly time for a big party.
Founder Enrique Barrios Limón, or El Profe, says: “What has been most fulfilling is that wherever in the world we’ve performed, the 'kids' have been met with enthusiasm. It’s reflected in the passion with which they dance.”
Locally, the Xiutla Ballet can be enjoyed in all their splendor most Friday nights at the Plaza Lázaro Cárdenas just around sunset. Or stop in to watch them at the same plaza on Saturdays when they practice their dance routines.
